Matters of the Heart: Tips from the American Heart Association This Valentine’s Day

Claire Olsen

Valentine’s Day is here, and while we’re all about celebrating love, it’s also the perfect time to focus on the most important symbol of the holiday: your heart. Beyond its emotional connections, your heart is a powerhouse that keeps you going every single day. So, how can you show it some love? We turned to the American Heart Association to share their top tips for keeping your heart happy and healthy.

  1. Move Your Heart: "One of the best things you can do for your heart is to keep it active. Regular exercise strengthens your heart muscle and improves circulation,” says the American Heart Association. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week. Take a brisk walk, go for a jog, or even dance to your favorite songs this Valentine’s Day—your heart will thank you!

  2. Eat With Your Heart in Mind: Valentine’s Day may be synonymous with chocolate, and the good news is, dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher) can actually be heart-healthy in moderation! The American Heart Association also recommends incorporating other heart-friendly foods into your meals, such as salmon, avocados, nuts, and berries. “These foods are packed with omega-3s, fiber, and antioxidants that support cardiovascular health,” they explain.

  3. Manage Stress—Your Heart Will Notice: Stress doesn’t just affect your mind; it takes a toll on your heart, too. “Chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure and other heart issues over time,” says the American Heart Association. Find ways to unwind, whether it’s meditating, journaling, or enjoying some quality time with loved ones. Even a short walk outside can make a big difference.

  4. Don’t Skip Your Check-Ups: "Your heart deserves regular attention, so don’t wait for a problem to arise before seeing a healthcare provider,” advises the American Heart Association. Routine check-ups and screenings can catch potential issues early, keeping your heart in the best shape possible. If you’re due for an appointment, use this Valentine’s Day as a reminder to book it.

  5. Stay Hydrated: It’s easy to forget, but staying hydrated plays a vital role in heart health. “When you’re dehydrated, your heart has to work harder to pump blood,” explains the American Heart Association. Make water your go-to beverage this holiday, and if you indulge in a glass of wine or two, be sure to balance it with plenty of H2O.
